The PMR.africa awards for UMAs: All the winners and how they won

The first ever PMR.africa awards for underwriting management agencies were announced earlier this week at a breakfast in Johannesburg. The awards were based on a national survey of UMAs in South Africa, based on telephonic interviews with a national sample of 120 directors, senior managers and short-term underwriting managers selected from short-term brokers and insurance companies.

“We did not ask these companies and individuals to rate specific UMAs. Rather, we asked them to nominate the best UMAs in the particular categories and then rate these companies on 11 attributes. Respondents were not prompted to rate specific companies,” Johan Hattingh, CEO of PMR.africa told RISKSA in a telephonic interview. “The respondents were asked to give verbatim comments on the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the companies they rated. The ratings are based on the perceptions of the respondents and not on the company’s financials.”

Hattingh is an associate member of the South African Marketing Research Association (SAMRA) and a member of the Ethics Institute of South Africa. “We did not conduct the research for a third party and this is not commissioned research for any institution. It is a PMR.africa initiative. The research data is available to any person or institution that wants to look into it.”

"The purpose of the awards is to create a global and unique marketing tool for the company or institution, as well as to enhance excellence in industry and to set a bench mark in industry. We want the company receiving the award to thank its personnel and staff for creating the perception and reality out there that this company or institution is an undisputed leader in the respective industry."

Respondents rated the companies on the following 11 attributes: adaptability; attitude; competence; confidence level of the underwriter; financial strength of the underwriter; full authorisation to accept/agree claim; innovativeness; know-how of advisers; quality; reputation (i.e. perception of the company’s brand, integrity, CSI); and speed.

The highest scorer across all categories was Commercial and Industrial Acceptances.

Below is a complete list of the winners and their scores, where 1 is poor and 5 is outstanding.

Comments from some of the winners

Christelle Fourie, managing director of MUA Insurance Acceptances, says she is thrilled that the company has been recognised for its strength in providing tailor-made risk management solutions for the executive motor vehicle market. “We place a lot of effort to fully understand the specific needs of this market and take pride in establishing solid relationships with key industry players to ensure we can offer all-encompassing solutions.”

“It is highly rewarding to have MUA’s ability and expertise acknowledged by industry stakeholders. This award is a testament to the dedication and incredibly high work ethic of the company and its employees,” says Fourie.

MUA was the winner in the Specialised High Value Executive Vehicles category. Execuline Motor Underwriting Managers was the runner-up.

“It is particularly gratifying to receive the PMR.africa Diamond Arrow Award for our work in this small but important area and bears testament to the quality and hard work of the Astra team,” comments Steven Forcey, director of Astra Maritime, the winner in the Marine Liabilities category.  “That we have been recognised by the broker market as the market leader proves that we are doing something right. We will not be complacent and will build upon this success so that we are seen as the marine insurer of choice across all marine classes.”

Managing director of Scintilla,Jim Connolly, says, “We are proud to receive an award from our peers in the industry itself in recognition of our service standards.  Awards like these set the benchmark in the industry and are also an acknowledgement of the effort and hard work of our staff that have contributed to our success. After all, there is a successful team behind each successful and highly rated company, department or institution. The award enhances excellence in our industry and positions us as undisputed leaders in our field.”

Scintilla was the runner-up in the Engineering Risks category, which was won by a small margin by AC & E Engineering Underwriting Managers.
